Austin pest control

We are Texas's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Austin raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Austin pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Austin Raccoon Control Tip: How To Deal With A Raccoon Infestation In The Chimney
Dealing with a wild animal problem around your property is not always a pleasant issue to deal with, as it can often be associated with health risks, animal poop and damage to your home. Raccoons can be very elusive creatures, and are also talented climbers, so it is possible that from time to time they may be able to find their way into a cavity or space in the chimney. Once there however, they can build a nest. The most important mistake to avoid here is that you should never light a fire – this is more likely to choke the animals and cause them to fall into the fireplace, rather than forcing them out of the chimney.

Identifying A Raccoon Infestation
There are several signs that you can look for that may indicate the presence of a raccoon, and one of the first is if you hear animal sounds such as scratching during the night, when raccoons are most active. You may also see that food sources around your property, such as garbage bags are being shredded open to get access to food. Another sign worth considering is whether you see any raccoon poop, which is similar in shape to dog poop, but will usually have berries or partially digested fruit in the poop.

Installing A Cage Trap To Catch The Problem Animal
The first step to dealing with raccoons in the chimney is to identify how they are getting in and out. They may be climbing in through an open chimney pot, or may have found a crack in the masonry they can exploit. Once you know how they are getting in, install a trap over this entrance, and use chicken wire to create a funnel that will force the raccoon into the trap. You will then need to check the trap regularly until you can see that the raccoon has been captured.

Checking Your Chimney For Baby Raccoons
Before you relocate the raccoon that you have captured, you should also check the area for baby raccoons, and because of the location of the nest it can be difficult to get to. For this reason, it may be worth asking a chimney sweep that has one of their cameras used to check for blockages to see if they can find the nest, and see if you have to deal with any baby raccoons. If there are, try and get these out and relocate them with the female raccoon you have trapped.

Cleaning And Repairs
It is important that if you have trapped and removed a raccoon in your chimney, that you should make sure the chimney is cleaned before you use the chimney again. Having nesting material in the chimney when you light a fire can cause a significant hazard, and especially if there is a space or gap in the flue, can cause a fire risk too. You should have the chimney examined to make sure that any repairs are carried out if required, as raccoons can cause some damage, or may have exploited any damage to get into the chimney in the first place.

Preventing Future Raccoon Problems In Your Chimney
The key step that you can use to keep raccoons out of your chimney is to ensure that you have a sturdy chimney cap installed over the top of your chimney pot. These metal caps allow smoke to escape from the chimney easily, but prevent any animals from being able to climb down the chimney. It is also worth checking on the structure of your property from time to time, and making sure there are no loose tiles or damaged masonry around the chimney, that may give access to wild animals.
